Our Founding

Kahlie and her kid in front of a ball pit

Kahlie and her husband, Riley, both grew up in Illinois playing multiple sports including gymnastics, dance and cheerleading for her and baseball and soccer for him. Then they moved to Camp Hill in 2019 to continue their careers, so he joined local sports leagues, she tried different gyms/studios, and together they played pick-up sand volleyball as ways to meet new people and stay active. That evolved to include grass volleyball tournaments, which got Kahlie thinking about joining a local grass volleyball league but couldn’t find one.

Then, Kahlie became pregnant and she lessened that activity. They welcomed their little one to the world, and in those early stages of growth, Kahlie frequently found herself saying "we're starting [behavior] now to build a healthy habit." That phrase includes her return to some of her pre-pregnancy fitness activities and the thought of a grass volleyball league returned to the forefront.

That’s when it dawned on her… "what if I started my own grass volleyball league?" Inspired by exposure to nonprofits and people giving back to their communities, the idea evolved to have the league's profits support children in building their own healthy habits. She valued the foundation that youth sports gave her and wanted to give that same opportunity to local children. Then the possibilities exploded - nutrition and mental wellness too, multiple sports leagues, hosting children's camps... With a strong feeling that this was the right thing to do, Wellness Grows began.
